The King of the White Squirrels

The white haired gentleman is Andy Deboer. He is known as the king of the white squirrels in Exeter. When a baby falls from the nest, white or gray, they often end up at Andy's. He and his wife Gloria are fabulous people. Salt of the earth. They also own a dog and cat, which I assumed would present a problem for the babies, but it's like a bleeding Disney film. They all get along. The person in the suit is perhaps less noteworthy. It was some high schooler sweating their uh... tail off, in the scorching sun.

Ah, love is in the air. Here is one of the pictures I was talking about. This one was taken by Andy Deboer. These guys look like they're making out but actually their teeth are locked in a mortal death grip. Okay, not really. But I'm told that white squirrels are often chased off by the common gray squirrels. The gene that makes them white is perceived (so I'm told) as a sign of weakness or illness. Which brings up one of the key points of contention: what constitutes a true white squirrel? An albino with pink eyes - these squirrels lack pigment in their skin and fur, which makes them white - or a white squirrel with black eyes which indicates that the squirrels have white pigment in their fur

Here's a great shot of my wife Nicole and I. Thats not some kind of sci-fi squirrel trap in her arms. It's an enclosure for a microphone. She did a lot of audio on the project. That's me with the video camera - a Canon XL1s - a very bad camera in my opinion. I got it because you can use Canon photo lenses on it with an adaptor. My plan was to use telephoto lenses to capture the white squirrel in action from long distances. As it turns out we didn't use the telephoto lenses very much at all. Due in large part to our challenges in finding the squirrels. Now I'm not trying to prove that these animals don't exist with the film, and I expect that I'll probably get a horde of angry responses from people that it SOOOOO EASY to find them, but as you'll see there are a number of road blocks in our path. There are clearly photos of these animals and we found a number of stuffed specimens on the trail.

In 2004 a young filmmaker from Rochester, NY decided to solve a long standing mystery: Which town can truly call itself "The Home of the White Squirrel". The result - "White Wonder" a 25 minute documentary detailing our madcap road trip across the U.S. and Canada. We meet a lot of great people but had a few problems locating these elusive animals.
